In Mantes la Jolie

Hey Everybody,

Last transfer I was transferred to Mantes-la-Jolie with Elder Harris. This transfer I'm staying here. Life is good. I haven't much time for details, but I just wanted to let the world know I'm still doing great, and I'm very thankful for the Restoration of the Gospel.

no need for a gospel restoration - we have the bible - 100% perfect - grace alone - by faith alone - in christ alone - anything else will damn a person to hell.

Okay, so I'm putting my faith in Christ's grace. Whew, I'm saved. By your measure, then, I have nothing to worry about. And if I add to that the famous "faith without works is dead" from the Bible, surely that won't damn me to hell?

Is it wrong if I back up my faith with good works? I'm not saying that I'm earning my way to heaven. I know I can't get there except through the grace of Christ. I'm just saying I love Jesus so much that I want to follow his example, follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and go about doing good.

1) The only way any of us can be saved is by the grace of Christ. Noone on earth can be saved without the grace of Jesus Christ.

2) In order to be entitled to this grace, we MUST have faith in Christ. Faith in any other thing will fail. Only faith in Christ can save us.

We are then forced to ask, how do I have faith in Christ? What does it actually mean to have faith in Christ?

Does it mean to just believe that he is our Savior? No.... (James 2:19) Even devils can believe that Christ is the Savior, but that belief alone isn't faith.

God will give His grace to the humble (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5). Humility is an inward characteristic that itself can't be seen, but is evidenced through our actions.

Likewise, faith is an inward characteristic that cannot be directly seen, but is evidenced through our actions. (James 2:20-26) If our works are evil, this is proof that we don't have faith in Christ. Good works are EVIDENCE that we have faith in Christ; but the good works aren't enough to save us.

Good works are the evidence that we have faith in Christ, which faith gives us access to His saving grace.

So while good works won't save anyone, if they AREN'T doing them, they certainly aren't saved, since good works are the evidence of faith in Christ; and without faith in Christ a person cannot be saved.

It is best summed up by these scriptures:

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2 Nephi 25:23
23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

We do not boast in our good works as saving us, because they DON'T! We are only saved by the grace of Christ THROUGH faith. The good works are just proof that we have faith in Christ, thus, are saved.

In the words of Christ:
(John 14:15,21,31)

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

If you love Jesus, keep his commandments. Keep His commandments - do good works. The good works won't save you, but they will put you in good graces with the ONLY person who can.

-Dan
